    Give Me My Drugs!...

    What's the DEAL with people using so much drugs these days? I'm not talking about the ones who use it legally either. For the past SEVERAL shifts it never fails. We get a call at 2, 3am in the morning and go out... to someone who is either faking a seizure.... trying to get some valium... or someone who is having "pain" that can't be helped by normal OTC stuff. And usually when they have "pain" they've also been taking pain medications... and when we ask if they have a prescription... no they don't... they're using their family's... friends... etc... and they're asking us to take them to the hospital to get a prescription for the pain medication. This one woman we had last night... had the nerve to try to get us to take her to a different hospital, 30 miles out of the way... because she knew the doctor in the ER wouldn't prescribe her pain medications. The drug problem where I work is amazing... for such a small city. I'm just wondering is this problem happening everywhere, or is it just in a localized area? It's sad. That's one thing I have very little compassion for is people who abuse drugs... or alchohol. I can understand they need help to get off the drugs, but if they don't want to help themsevles there ain't nobody else going to be able to help them either. They just end up hurting their familes, friends, and either killing themselves or ruining their life for good. I've dealt with people like that in my personal life... more the reason I have very little sympathy for someone who is abusing something and doesn't want help... if they want help... then I'm all for them.

    ah such a difficult problem. self medicators. very hard to help, because the reason they are self medicating isnt be addressed in so many cases. dont be too hard on them they are probably dying inside in their souls.

    and no, it isnt a local problem. it is nation wide. world wide maybe. the world is losing its mind. sometimes only the Great Physician can help them. but He will, given half a chance. He did me.

    I understand your frustration, but this is only the beginning of a trend that took decades to get into full swing. We are a Nation highly dependant on drugs (or medications, if that makes you feel better about it). Twenty years ago the average person over 55 was on 5.5 different daily medications. I cannot even imagine how many more it is now. We have massive corporations making and pushing drugs upon us, from childhood thru retirement. They are favored by the Government for frequent & unusual special considerations. Drugs are now an American Way of Life.

    I think it facilitates the abuse of mind-altering drugs and chemicals (of which Alcohol is the single most deadly in numbers and souls lost). I mean if I take my Zoloft to feel better, and take my little blue pill before bed, why not have a couple drinks or a valium to loosten up tonight?

    But here is the kicker;

    One in Seven who drink alcohol or take mind-altering drugs will develop a deadly disease. This disease will cause them to become - by all legal definition, completely insane. After years of abusive EMS calls from addicts, it took me a long time to get these issues in perspective. I got jaded and judgemental because I never saw any successful recovery stories. All I ever saw was those not ready for help yet. Those that do get better don't call ambulances much anymore :>)

    But today I see things differently, and try to keep in mind that they are very very sick people - who are so screwed up they don't even know it - and have not yet hit bottom hard enough to want help. Sometimes it is hard, but most of the time I can deal with them less resentfully now. I know that someday - even the worst hard cases - will eventually get real & get help. I know that some of those who do get help, will get well and become people that do not even resemble the sorry looking & worse acting, soul in my care today.

    Best Always,

    Dan

    Thanks for your blog! I too have seen drugs destroy the lives of friends and relatives. Also, you are right-you can't make a person stop!
    For many years I worked at an intake (triage) desk at a local ER. I can't tell you how many times people came in looking for drugs. They left angry! I was glad when they left!
